Topic: A Perfect God, A Broken Vessel

Scripture: 2 Corinthians 12:7-10

There is such a feel-good factor about the testimony of Apostle Paul. The persecutor who became a mighty Apostle; the one who was least likely to be chosen, became an example of what God can do through a man. Thanks to his letters to various churches, we have a rich understanding of God’s plan for churches, families, and individuals. The testimonies, revelations, and miracles seen in his ministry make Paul an ideal role model for anyone who wants to follow Jesus.

Fortunately, Paul does not just give us half the picture to present himself as a deputy Jesus. He reveals to us his difficult moments, disappointments and frustrations, and his tendency to be puffed up, prompting a thorn in the flesh. With all he had seen, heard, and imparted to people, he always stressed the need for him to keep pressing to know God deeply, operating like a bondservant rather than a celebrity. He did this because he knew that the power and glory had nothing to do with the vessel but the treasure in the vessel. It was God at work. Outside of God, Paul was just a broken vessel with as many weaknesses as the ordinary man. His testimony and his ministry did not erase that. It just shifted the focus from the vessel to the perfect God at work in him.

We have not been called to project ourselves as perfect vessels. The vessel will always be broken, scarred, and ordinary. It is in the weakness and brokenness of the vessel that we clearly see the perfect treasure within. Your scars and troubles don’t disqualify you. They make you the perfect partner for the King of Glory. In a world of “settings” and self-projection, don’t be forced to present a broken vessel as a perfect one. Your brokenness is the doorway to His perfection.

Prayer: Father, it is in You that I find glory, power, and strength. May my life, in all its brokenness, continually reflect Your glory to my generation.
