Topic: The Tug Of War

Scripture: Galatians 5:16-25

Tug of war is a contest between two people or two teams pulling at opposite ends of a rope. The goal is to drag the other team over a central line. It becomes a more exciting contest when both teams are evenly matched. For many people, this is an apt description of their spiritual lives.

It looks like every day is a constant battle between pleasing God or pleasing your carnal desires; being led by the Holy Spirit versus being led by your flesh. But that is not the way God wants us to serve Him. It shouldn’t be a struggle to please God. The only reason why it seems like a tug of war is because both teams are evenly matched in a person’s life, sometimes tilting more to the flesh.

The scripture says that if we submit to the leading of the Spirit, we won’t yield to the cravings of the flesh. It is only a contest when you have not submitted your mind to the Holy Spirit. But once you allow the Holy Spirit to direct your thoughts and decisions, having your mind renewed by God’s Word, you will have daily victories, not daily struggles. There is grace available to help if only you would allow God’s Spirit to lead.

Prayer: Father, I yield to the leading of the Holy Spirit. And I walk in daily victory over my flesh, by Your grace at work in me.
