Topic: First Things First

Scripture: Matthew 6:24-34

Imagine someone building a house, and the first thing they do is to get a chandelier to the site when there’s no foundation. A chandelier may be a great addition to the building, but you cannot start your building with it. Or they could get the most expensive curtains, and yet no pillars have been erected. These items are not bad, but because the priority of the builder is wrong, it becomes a mess. Rather than beauty, we have chaos.

And yet, these are the choices many people are making in building their lives. They are going for fancy chandeliers, curtains, and decorative pieces when their foundation has not been established. That is because a foundation takes time and effort, and very rarely will someone come to admire a foundation. So, in the haste for public approval, people are ignoring the foundation. They get a testimony today, and by tomorrow, the very thing they testified about is bringing them sorrow. They become popular, but their hearts are empty.

Jesus gave us wisdom to build our lives by pointing out what must come first. The priority for a godly life must be seeking God’s Kingdom and His righteousness. God’s word must be the rock on which you build the foundation of your life. All the testimonies and blessings are additions. A life of chaos is one that is busy searching for the additions when the priority is not in place. There is no blessing that your Father will not give you. But, first things first.
