Topic: Break The Box
Scripture Reading: Mark 14:3-9
Jesus was in the home of Simon in Bethany when the woman (identified as Mary in the Gospel of John) came with her alabaster box of very precious spikenard ointment. There wasn’t too much of a reaction as she cried and wiped the feet of Jesus with her hair. The reaction became pronounced when she broke the box because that was when the fragrance of the ointment filled the room, and they all realized how expensive the ointment was.
She could only anoint Jesus after the box was broken. The value of her sacrifice was seen after the box was broken. Imagine if she was so attached to the box, she didn’t want to break it. Or perhaps she may have thought to keep her box intact because she didn’t want people talking about her. She probably would have missed out on the blessing of preparing Jesus for his burial and being mentioned wherever the gospel is preached. Thank God, she broke it, and the effect could not be hidden or denied.
Every Christian carries precious ointment in the box of their human lives, but as long as the box is intact, there is no effect. As long as we remain loyal to the routine of our humanity, we miss out on changing the world with the fragrance of the glory within us. You must break the box, disrupt the cycle of comfort, and allow the treasure within to find expression. The best of you will only be seen if you would surrender to the leading of the Holy Spirit to break the box.
Prayer: Father, I yield my life to you, broken and open for the release of Your glory.
