Topic: Entitled Or Hungry For Glory?

Scripture Reading: Philippians 3:7-14

In sports, especially in a game like football, you can have a match between a popular, expensively assembled team and another team that is relatively unknown. It is generally expected that the big team will win the match, but every now and then, the underdogs spring a surprise and beat the popular team. In such matches, you will realize that the smaller team was hungry for a win. They played with passion and aggression, while the big team played like they had already won the match; so relaxed and pedestrian. Instead of playing aggressively, the big team spent more time complaining, asking for free kicks and penalties. That is an entitlement mentality.

It is easy to feel entitled in our walk with God rather than having genuine hunger for His glory. We can become familiar with the things of God in a way that makes us take them for granted, like having a prayer and Bible study routine. When that happens, we focus on things going our way because we are people of God, rather than aggressively pursuing God’s will. Paul talks about how he discards the things that could make him feel entitled as an Apostle of God. He forfeits these rights so that they will not become a distraction to his assignment. He is like an athlete who denies himself comfort of sleep and junk food, so that he can stay in shape for his race and win.

Instead of being impressed with our knowledge and accomplishments, we must focus on the glory ahead and the things we are yet to attain in Christ. Rather than feel entitled, which leads to pride, let us stay hungry for God’s glory and yielded for any level of service, big or small.

Prayer: Father, satisfy me with Your glory. Nothing else compares to You.
